The Use of Compounded GHK-Cu
Background
GHK is a three amino acid peptide (glycine, histidine, lysine) first identified in human blood in 1973. It binds tightly to copper, forming GHK-Cu. Blood levels are highest in young adults and fall by more than half by age 60.
How It Is Thought to Work
GHK-Cu signals skin cells to make collagen, elastin, and other building blocks of the skin’s support structure. It also appears to calm inflammation and support antioxidant activity. Lab studies suggest it influences a large number of genes involved in repair.
What It Has Been Studied For
GHK-Cu has been studied for wound healing and, in cosmetic studies, for fine lines, skin thickness, and firmness.
It is a common ingredient in skin care products, usually at lower strengths than a compounded prescription.
Safety and Side Effects
Topical GHK-Cu is generally well tolerated. Some people notice mild redness or irritation, especially when starting.
Test a small area first, and avoid using it at the same time as strong acids or retinoids unless your prescriber says otherwise.
Summary
GHK-Cu is one of the best studied peptides for skin. A prescription strength cream lets your prescriber choose a concentration that fits your goals.
