Which Is It, FDA? The BPC-157 Flip-Flop

The FDA called these injectables too risky. Now it might let pharmacies make them anyway.

You've seen them on TikTok. BPC-157, the one people call Wolverine. Little vials sold online with a "for research use only" label, so nobody has to answer for what's in them. This week, HHS sent the White House a plan that could bring BPC-157 and similar compounds into compounding pharmacies. I'm a pharmacist, and I have some thoughts.

Too Risky, Then Off the List

The FDA had put BPC-157 and more than a dozen other injectables like it on its list of substances too risky for pharmacies to compound. The FDA's own safety page still spells out why. For BPC-157, it lists possible immune reactions, problems with impurities and characterizing the ingredient, and "no, or only limited, safety-related information" for the ways it was proposed to be used.

This spring, those compounds came off that list. The reason wasn't a new safety finding. The groups that had nominated them withdrew their nominations. The safety page still shows every concern.

The Scientists Said No. The Panel Said Yes.

In July, the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee looked at seven of these compounds. Before the meeting, FDA scientists concluded none of the seven had enough evidence to go on the list pharmacies can compound from, and some had never been studied in humans at all.

The panel recommended six of them anyway. BPC-157 passed 8 to 6, with one abstention. According to the AP, that panel was selected by Kennedy's health department and included several doctors, pharmacists and consultants who work with these compounds.

So which is it? Too risky, or totally fine? You can't have it both ways.

What "Interim Access" Actually Means

The document sitting at the White House is an interim access policy for compounding. The text isn't public, so nobody outside the government knows which compounds it covers, what the conditions are or how long it lasts.

Two people familiar with the plan told the AP it's enforcement discretion. That's a fancy way of saying the rule stays on the books, and the FDA promises not to come after pharmacies that compound outside it, as long as they meet certain conditions. It doesn't make any of these compounds FDA-approved. Formally adding one to the list takes rulemaking, which the AP says could take years.

The FDA has done this before. It already has an interim policy, last updated in January 2025, where it generally doesn't act against pharmacies compounding certain ingredients that are still under review. The difference here is that the FDA's own reviewers said no first.

The Hype Machine Is Already Lined Up

Kennedy's argument is that Americans are already buying gray market versions made in China and other countries, so pharmacies should be allowed to sell them. Those products are all over TikTok.

Look who's cheering. The AP reports some of the biggest names in the wellness movement sell these injections and supplements. Big telehealth companies have already announced they'll offer them if the government eases access. Wall Street analysts estimate the market at $2 billion to $3 billion.

When something gets that much hype and it's all cash pay, the price gets set by whoever yells the loudest. You end up paying a hype tax.

What I'll Tell You at the Counter

I'm not going to stand here and tell you a vial of BPC-157 is going to fix your knee. That's not my job, and the FDA's own scientists say the evidence isn't there.

What I will tell you is what you're paying for. Whatever you buy, from whoever you buy it, you deserve to know what the product actually cost and what the markup is. That goes double for anything sold on hype.

Why We Price It Like Everything Else

Everything we sell is priced at what we pay plus a transparent fee. No hype tax. No middleman. We don't have any reason to pretend a price is higher than it is. We compete on price.
