The Use of Compounded Semax

Background

Semax was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the 1980s. Researchers took a short piece of ACTH, a hormone made by the pituitary gland, and added three amino acids to make it last longer in the body. The result keeps some of ACTH’s effects on the brain without its effects on the adrenal glands.

How It Is Thought to Work

In animal studies, Semax raises levels of BDNF, a protein that supports the growth and survival of nerve cells. It also appears to influence dopamine and serotonin signaling. These findings come mostly from lab and animal research.

What It Has Been Studied For

In Russia, Semax has been studied and used for ischemic stroke, cognitive problems, and some optic nerve conditions.

Research on attention and memory in healthy people is limited, and few studies have been done outside Russia.

Safety and Side Effects

In published studies, Semax has generally been well tolerated. The most common side effect is mild nasal irritation.

Tell your prescriber about any medications that affect mood or brain chemistry.

Summary

Semax has a long history of use in one country and limited research elsewhere. Your prescriber can help you decide whether it makes sense for you.
