TB-500 is a short synthetic peptide taken from the active region of thymosin beta-4, a protein found in nearly every cell. Thymosin beta-4 helps cells move to where they are needed during repair.

The Use of Compounded TB-500

Background

Thymosin beta-4 is a 43 amino acid protein that binds actin, the building block cells use to change shape and move. TB-500 is a seven amino acid fragment of that protein, the region researchers identified as most responsible for its effect on cell movement.

How It Is Thought to Work

By influencing actin, thymosin beta-4 helps cells such as skin cells and blood vessel cells migrate into damaged areas. It also appears to calm inflammation and support new blood vessel formation. The fragment is believed to share some of these actions, though it has been studied far less than the full protein.

What It Has Been Studied For

The full thymosin beta-4 protein has been studied in people for wound healing and eye surface repair.

TB-500 itself has mostly been studied in lab and animal models of wound healing and soft tissue injury.

Safety and Side Effects

Large human safety studies of TB-500 have not been done. Possible side effects include injection site irritation, headache, and fatigue.

People with a history of cancer should discuss it with their prescriber first. TB-500 is prohibited in tested sports.

Summary

TB-500 is built from a well studied repair protein, but research on the fragment itself is early. Your prescriber can help you weigh what is known.
