Nearly $2 Billion in Alleged Fake Care: Who Pays for Fake Claims

Fake claims don't disappear. Somebody pays them, and that somebody is usually everyone.
What Was Charged
The Justice Department announced charges against 15 people in Los Angeles, including six medical professionals. The cases together involve nearly $2 billion in alleged losses. Eight people were arrested.
These are charges. An indictment is an allegation, and every defendant is presumed innocent.
The Patients
The largest case is $1.6 billion billed for addiction treatment. According to the Justice Department, people who were unhoused, living in poverty or in recovery support groups were recruited with free flights, apartments, hotel stays, cash and gift cards. Prosecutors say some patients were drugged to keep them from leaving. The "therapy" was Zoom sessions with more than a hundred people on them.
These were people looking for help getting sober. Every one of them deserved real care.
The Pharmacy Claims
There's another one. One case involves nearly $270 million in pharmacy claims submitted to Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program, for high-reimbursing generic drugs the charges call medically unnecessary. According to the Justice Department, Medi-Cal paid at least about $178 million of it.
Case | Amount (DOJ) |
Addiction treatment / sober homes | $1.6 billion+ |
Hospice | $138 million+ |
Atherectomy procedures | $134 million |
Medi-Cal pharmacy claims | nearly $270 million submitted |

Questions People Ask
Has any of this been proven? These are charges, and every defendant is presumed innocent while the cases move through court.
Why does this matter if I'm not in California? Fake claims raise what programs and plans spend. Everyone who pays premiums and taxes ends up covering that cost.
What's a medically unnecessary prescription? In this case, the charges describe generic drugs billed at high reimbursement when patients didn't need them.
