The Farmer Who Secretly Paid Strangers' Prescriptions

For almost 10 years, a farmer secretly paid strangers' prescriptions. $100 a month.
His name was Hody Childress. His story was first reported in January 2023, and it's going around again this month. I'm a pharmacist, and I think it's worth telling right, with the details that were reported.
A Folded $100 Bill
Hody spent his whole life in Geraldine, Alabama, working as a farmer and at a nearby Lockheed Martin Space facility, according to the BBC. He was a regular at his local drugstore.
One day he pulled the pharmacist aside and asked, "Do you ever have anybody that can't pay for their medication?" She told him, "Well, yeah, unfortunately, that happens a good bit."
He handed her a folded bill and said, "Next time that happens, will you use this? Don't tell where it came from, and don't tell me who needed it, just say it's a blessing from the Lord."
She thought it was a one-time gift. The next month, he came back with another folded $100 bill. According to NPR, all he said was, "you know what to do with that."
What It Added Up To
What was reported | Detail |
How often | Every month, for almost 10 years (BBC) |
How much each time | A folded $100 bill (NPR) |
Total | Nearly $12,000 (BBC) |
Who knew | Almost nobody, until he told his daughter near the end (BBC) |
When he died | Jan. 1, 2023, at age 80 (BBC) |
When illness kept him home, he asked his daughter to keep taking a $100 bill to the drugstore on the first of the month, as long as he was alive. The secret came out at his funeral. NPR reports more donations have come into the pharmacy since, inspired by him, and the BBC says people across the US called wanting to help keep the fund going.
The New York Times reported on one family the fund helped: a medicine for a severe allergic reaction was going to cost them $800, even with insurance coverage.
The Other Side of the Story
I love this story. I also know the moment that made Hody's money necessary, because every pharmacist has seen it. Someone hears the price at the register, does the math in their head and walks away without their medicine.
Hody couldn't fix that for everyone. Nobody can with an envelope. Part of the fix is simpler: tell people the price before they ever get to the counter.
